AUTOCAD HAS INSTALL PROBLEMS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE IS LACKING
I Dread The Yearly AutoCad Upgrades... There Are Always Problems
Autocad is a mongrel program. I am on subscription and although the costs have now come down to $700 a year (mainly due to the Aussie dollar performing well compared to the American dollar) in my opinion it is about $700 overpriced. I am particularly annoyed at the moment as I have just spent most of the day trying to load my new Autocad 2013 upgrade. I had to fill out several questionaires and forms earlier in the year just to get my upgrade on DVD rather than just as an internet upload. For the money you would think that the default service would be to give you a disk. So much easier to load and portable if you do a bit of contract work like me.
I slipped the disk into the drive and started the install with some trepidation as there always is some issue when it comes to Autocad upgrades and installs. After about 5 minutes I got the first error message "error 2738 could not access VB script run time for custom action". Over the following 15 minutes there were 2 more of these errors...the first being "the installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with the package. The error code is 2738" The next was just "internal error 2738". Phew!! I sighed and drew a breath. I knew instantly that this was going to be another long haul.
No Help From AutoCad Support... Luckily Others Have Had Similar Problems & Posted Fixes
Last year I had trouble with my install and it took me 2 days to figure it out by myself after days of useless interaction with my Autocad support tech by email from some-where on the subcontinent. I had a nagging feeling that this error was the same as last years, but it was so long ago that I couldn't be sure. Luckily I managed to find the same helpful posting again. My many thanks to Osman from Turkey. He managed to do what my Subscription Tech support technician could not. I have cut & pasted his post into the extended text below. It assumes that you are a little tech savy and know a bit of basic dos. It also messes with the registry which is a bit scary. Luckily windows 7 OS has a good "System Restore" function that is easy to use if a mistake is made. I did a quick check to see if there were any recent restore points available before proceeding as I have been caught out once before when still using my old XP OS. Basically 2 registry entries need to be deleted and new ones put in. Osman's steps 1 & 2 I ran through the command prompt, which was in itself hard to find in my new Windows 7 OS. I just hovered my mouse over the "All programs" tab in the start button & waited until the programs and folders appeared. The command Prompt was hidden away under "Accessories". After deleting the entries and replacing them everything worked fine.
How Long Did the Upgrade Take from AutoCad 2012 To 2013?
AutoCad has cost my business as an Adelaide Architect a lot of money in down-time over the years. This year was no exception. I started the main install at 10.30 and finished
at 2.30. The steps here only took about 10 minutes to actually do but hours to research and check before proceeding. The rest of the day was then spent getting Autocad back to looking the way my previous version did and having a quick look at all the new features. All up I wasted an entire day just getting back to the point I had been the day before with my old Autocad 2012. This is actually not bad as I wasted about a week on last years upgrade!! Editors Note: see my later blog post for updated information concerning this error & later versions of Autocad.
Basically this is what I did to delete the original files:
I then changed to the relevant directory so
that I could install the new registry keys. I am using a 64-bit version
of Windows and to do this I typed the following into the command prompt cd %windir%\syswow64
and pressed ENTER. The command prompt now was in the correct directory.
I could now enter the following command as per Osman's advice and it
would be in the correct place. regsvr32 vbscript.dll
The directory then needed to be changed again so I entered cd %windir%\system32 at the command prompt & now was
in the correct directory as per Osman's advice for this second installation. I now entered the following at
the prompt regsvr32 vbscript.dll
This installed the file required to the second location as specified
by Osman. I didn't have the misfortune to have installed Mcafee so I
didn't have to follow Osman's last step. My Autocad install when run
again worked perfectly.
Osmans Advice in full is copied as per his original post below. Again many thanks.... This helpful advice did the trick

Hello everyone. i know this problem and solution too ))) please fallow this steps.
first of all you have to delete the relevant registry entries and re-register the DLL. Please
make sure you back up the registry/system before you make any changes
to the registry (how u can look at from microsft official site) To delete the registry, please run following commands with elevated privileges
On Windows 7/64 bit System 1-) reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f 2-) reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f u must delete both
optional if you have 32 bit win7 On Windows 7 32 bit reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f
To Re-register the DLL please run following commands with elevated privileges make copy+paste one by one On Windows 7 64 bit System c:\windows\syswow64\regsvr32 vbscript.dll c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 vbscript.dll
On Windows 7 32 bit (optional for 32 bit win7) c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 vbscript.dll
this
step is so important. if u want to solve then you have to trust me. If
you had McAfee Antivirus in the past (even if you have unistalled it
might leave some trace) please use this tool to remove it completly. http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
now
intsall again. it will work, be sure )))) if you had activation problem
after install then write me again. i know that slotion too... Best Regard Osman from Turkey
I'm extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Anyway keep up the nice quality writing, it's rare to see a nice blog like
this one nowadays.
I love your blog.. very nice colors & theme.
Did you make this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you?
Plz answer back as I'm looking to design my own blog and would like to find out where u got this from. cheers
Hi Isaac. All pretty standard. Serendipity (blog software) comes as part of RVsitebuilder, which is one of the standard programs with my C panel. All part of the package from my IP retailer, VentraIP. VentraIP provide very good service at excellent rates. This was my first attempt at building a site or running a blog & although there was a lot to learn I have enjoyed the experience because of the excellent staff at VentraIP
You made some decent points there. I looked on the web to learn more about the issue and found
most people will go along with your views on this web site.
It's a shame you don't have a donate button! I'd certainly donate to this excellent blog! I suppose for now i'll settle for bookmarking and adding
your RSS feed to my Google account. I look forward to new updates and
will share this blog with my Facebook group. Chat soon!
Greate pieces. Keep writing such kind of info on
your blog. Im really impressed by your blog.
Hi there, You've done a great job. I will certainly digg it and individually suggest to my friends. I'm sure they will be benefited from this site.
Heya i'm for the first time here. I found this board and I to find It truly useful & it helped me out a lot. I am hoping to present something again and help others like you helped me.
With havin so much content and articles do you
ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright
violation? My website has a lot of unique content I've either written myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my authorization. Do you know any ways to help protect against content from being stolen? I'd truly appreciate it.
I take plagiarism as a compliment. If it is worth stealing it must have been worth saying! If they mention my site as the source I'm happy. The main upside is that if you have links embedded in what you write & they steal the whole article, even if no other acknowledgement is made, it is a way of getting new readers due to the back-links
Appreciating the dedication you put into your site and detailed information you offer.
It's nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn't the same unwanted rehashed information.
Great read! I've saved your site and I'm adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.
Thank you very much. This solves the problem that Autodesk should have solved in the first place! I agree also that subscription of autocad (and 3dsmax also in my case ) are quite expensive!
Regards,
Hugo Brito
Yes I agree. The cost of Autocad is prohibitive for most contract drafters. Over the last 15 years I have only met 2 others with legal copies. If Autodesk reduced the price by half they may actually find a new market....
I went through SO many articles/help blogs and NOTHING worked for this freaking Internal Error 2738. Thank you SO much for taking time in posting this. I now have autoCAD succesfully installed on my computer.
